The USS Mohawk CGC, an American warship from the Second World War, is the stage of Franke’s third project of his Sinking Worldseries.

The wreck, which serves as an artificial reef lying off Sanibel Island in Florida, is more than 50 m long and houses all kinds of corals and sea animals.

In this series the underwater photos stage scenes from the 40ies and 50ies, whose distinctive aesthetic depicts a world where dancing sailors and young women in petticoats re-enact an age of amusement.

By combining underwater scenes and stories from the past, Franke creates a surreal composition full of opposites, which merge into a fairytale-like spectacle.

The finished photos were eventually glued shut in plexiglass and exhibited on the wreck for three months.

Thus the very sea created a unique patina, adding life to the pieces.
